Notes
May 12, 2008
Things are progressing for our final performances of the year—we are planning on putting on a great show for you all on the 20th! The Blue Notes will also be doing some really nice community service this week as we perform at the State Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies—come check it out! We start playing tunes (alternating with the Russtones) at 6:30 and then the main event begins at 7pm.
Here is the info for this week:
• Youth Symphony Auditions
• Summer Camps
• Current Events
• Coming Events
• Band Expectations
The GF Youth Symphony will be holding open auditions for next Fall’s Youth Orchestra on May 15 and 16 at the Civic Center. Please contact Jessie Knowles at 453-4102 to schedule an audition if you are interested in trying out for this prestigious group.
Camps are important in marinating the skills that we have worked so hard to establish during the school year, and they also expose kids to excellent faculty and masters on their instruments. And they are great fun! Parents please consider sending your children to a music camp this summer, and students--think about getting out of town for a week and really learning some cool and new stuff to bring back to the bandroom.
Red Lodge Music Camp--in Red Lodge Montana from June 7-15. Cost is $395--$365 if you signup before May 10. This is a good camp if you want some really good private instruction, small ensemble experience, and like staying in hotels instead of cabins for your camping experience. There is usually a picnic in the mountains around Red Lodge one of the days, and campers get free time to explore downtown Red Lodge as well. Visit www.redlodgemusicfestival.org for more info.
They also have concert band and jazz band, as well as full orchestra to play in.
University of Montana Band Camp in Missoula on the UM Campus from June 22-28. Cost is $350. This is a good camp if you like the full band experience and like to work with college faculty--most of the day is devoted to rehearsals. You also get masterclasses on your instrument during the day every day. Campers stay in the dorms at UM. Dr. Griggs directs the HS Band (he is the interim director and also the marching band director there). Jazz Band is available and directed by Lance Boyd. There are afternoon activities on campus and evening concerts. Go to www.umt/bandcamp for more info.
Flathead Lake Music Camp--on Flathead Lake. July 6-12 (High school camp) Cost is $325--$310 if registered before May 15. This is a real "camp" experience--you stay in cabins right on the lakeshore and eat in a dining hall. Band rehearsals are broken up by clinics and masterclasses on your instrument. Jazz Band is available, and so is choir. Activities include water things--canoeing, swimming. Go to www.flatheadlakemusiccamp.org for more info.
Yellowstone Music and Jazz Camps. Jazz is July 6-11 ($510) and Music Camp is June 22-27 ($440). These are located in the mountains near Yellowstone Park in Wyoming and are affiliated with Northwest College in Powell. Lots of scholarships are available for these camps as well, especially if you were in All State or District Festival (brings down the price quite a bit!). Go to www.northwestmusic.org for more info.
I have posters and application forms in the hallway outside the bandroom. We will also be offering camp scholarships to students following our May 20 concert--listen up in class for applications.
